Here are some tips to save some money for just a few dollars …
- Insulate your hot water heater
- Turn down the temperature on your water heater to 120°
- If you have a fireplace, make sure the damper is closed snugly (chimneys pull hot air out of a house).
- Turn down your heat two degrees during the day and four degrees at night. Better still, install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust your heat.
- Keep your heating system clean, not just the furnace or boiler, but vacuum the baseboard and clean the radiators.
- Cut down on drafts, especially under doors (with a strip of towel or "draft snake") and around windows (your local building center has a clear, peelable caulk that fills cracks nicely and is easily removed in the spring.) On a cold, windy day, feel for cracks—then plug them!
- Use cold water in clothes washing.
- Check for cracks where your foundation meets the sill timbers of the house. These are major reasons for cold floors and should be plugged.
